The Hunt:The Find: The Discovery of the World of Antiques

When I walk into an antique shop, I don’t just see items—I see stories waiting to be told.

Each piece has a soul, a whisper of the life once lived, and to me, that’s far more valuable than anything trendy or in vogue. Antiques aren’t just objects; they’re a doorway to nostalgia, to creativity, and to connection of times gone past.

I want you to think about the items in your life right now.

-What do they say about you?

-Are they placeholders, just filling a space?

Do they speak to who you are, how you live, who you have met?

For me, every piece I bring home tells a small story.

The Art of the Find

Finding the right piece isn’t about ticking the box. It’s about wandering, imagining, and seeing beyond the surface. I don’t walk into a shop thinking, I need a 1950s armchair or an Art Deco lamp. I let the pieces find me. Something catches my eye—maybe the curve of an old wooden chair or the way a faded floral pattern reminds me of my grandmother’s lounge room chair. I don’t overthink it.

Antiquing isn’t a science—it’s an adventure.  Some of my favorite pieces were ones I almost didn’t buy because I couldn’t immediately see where they’d fit. But when I took them home and gave them a chance, they transformed the space.

Nostalgia is Power

Nostalgia is a great compass. I think back to the treasures of my childhood: the floral teacups my nana used, the colourful tin pots in my granddad’s shed, or the way I loved to mix bold, unexpected colors in my childhood diary. Those memories shape my choices.

What about you? What colors and textures take you back? Maybe it’s a quilt you had on your bed or a quirky knick-knack that reminds you of a family road trip. Find pieces that speak to those memories. They’ll bring your space to life in ways no catalog ever could.

Create Spaces That Talk Back

I’m not afraid to experiment. Sometimes I pair a Victorian mirror with a mid-century sideboard. Sometimes I throw an old patchwork quilt over a modern sofa. Does it always work? Not at first. But that’s the joy of it—finding the balance, letting the pieces talk to each other until they tell a cohesive story.

And the best part? Those pieces aren’t just decor; they’re conversation starters. A vintage globe becomes a story about your love of travel. A stack of old postcards transforms into a history lesson. A set of mismatched chairs around your dining table shows your unapologetic originality.

Your Style, Your Rules

The thing is: there’s no right way to curate your home. Forget trends. Forget judgment. Your style should be as unique as your fingerprint. The beauty of antiques is that they allow you to create spaces that aren’t just beautiful but deeply personal.

So, start experimenting. Pick up that quirky vase even if you’re not sure where it will go. Let your walls tell stories. Surround yourself with textures, materials, and shapes that evoke emotion. Be bold. Let your home be your masterpiece, your conversation starter, your sanctuary.

Because in the end, antiques aren’t just about the past—they’re about how you let the past shape your present and inspire your future.
